During menopause, a woman may experience a number of unpleasant sensations that are associated with a deficiency of sex hormones. Such symptoms are easy to eliminate if you start using Ovestin - with the appointment of a gynecologist.

Ovestin: description of the drug

Ovestin - a number of hormonal agents, estrogen derivatives. The series is represented by tablets, suppositories and vaginal cream, produced in Ireland by Aspen Health. The vaginal cream is sold in tubes of 15 g, packed in a cardboard box, inside the package there is a special applicator for ease of use. The cream has White color, homogeneous in structure.

The cream contains the main component - estriol. In the body of a woman, this hormone is produced naturally in the ovaries, refers to estrogens (steroid hormones). During menopause and in a number of other diseases, estrogen production drops sharply, and estriol is the least active, quickly excreted from the body and the safest hormone to make up for the existing deficiency.

Other components in the composition of the drug:

  • chlorhexidine;
  • water;
  • sodium hydroxide;
  • lactic acid;
  • glycerol;
  • alcohols, etc.

The drug can be used in conjunction with Ovestin tablets, but more often with its help local treatment is carried out. How much does the drug cost in pharmacies? The price is quite high - about 1400 rubles.

The action of the drug

As an analogue of a natural hormone female body(even men have minimal amounts of estriol - it is produced by the adrenal glands), the drug helps eliminate estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women. This is necessary for the gradual adaptation of the body to new conditions and the elimination of unpleasant symptoms of menopause. The cream, when applied topically, has the following effects:

  • improves the function of the epithelial layer of the genitourinary tract;
  • optimizes the composition of local microflora and acid-base balance;
  • enhances local immunity, increasing the immune defense of the genital area and making the mucous membrane less susceptible to infection;
  • reduces major complaints in menopause- dryness, itching, discomfort with intimate contact;
  • stops urination disorders, including urinary incontinence, urine output in small portions, increased urge.

The drug does not cause failures natural process hormonal changes in the body, since estriol is retained in the cells only for a short period of time. The drug, when used in short courses, does not affect the condition of the mammary glands.

When using Ovestin, there is no return of monthly bleeding - the woman's menstruation will not resume.

The components of Ovestin are quickly and completely absorbed, the maximum concentration in the blood is recorded after an hour, while it is higher than when taking tablets. The hormone is excreted by the kidneys, in a small form through the intestines.

Indications for therapy

The medicine is used in women in the presence of signs characterizing the lack of sex hormones in the body.

Since the cream is intended for intravaginal administration, its highest efficiency is manifested in relation to the organs of the genitourinary system. The drug is included in the complex of measures for HRT (hormone replacement therapy) during menopause. The main indications for the use of Ovestin cream are as follows:

  • atrophic phenomena on the mucous membrane of the vagina, or atrophic colpitis;
  • the appearance of dryness, itching, burning in the vagina;
  • frequent urethritis, thinning of the urethra;
  • pain when urinating;
  • urinary incontinence in women.

Ovestin is also recommended before or after operations through the vagina, which are performed in postmenopausal women. Another important indication is the improvement of the condition of the mucous membrane for a more accurate diagnosis of oncological diseases.

The drug can also be used in women who are in the reproductive period. It helps to improve the condition of the cervix and cure infertility caused by cervical disorders. According to strict indications from the appointment of a specialist, the drug is used for synechia in children. It is used in girls to separate labial fusions when the vaginal opening is narrowed or absent.

Instructions for use

The drug is injected into the vagina using the attached applicator. It is enough to carry out therapy at night, once / day. Fill the applicator completely, which corresponds to 0.5 g of cream. The duration of therapy is no more than 28 days, but the dosage should be slowly reduced - not every day, but every other day, then twice / week. The indication for dose reduction is the elimination of symptoms.

Features of treatment in individual cases:

For maintenance therapy, the minimum effective dosage is used. After the end of the tablet intake, you can start using the cream on any day. The general course of therapy is determined by the doctor.

The risk of developing oncology increases after several years of using the drug, so you can’t abuse hormonal drugs!

During treatment, you need to be regularly examined by a gynecologist, and before starting therapy, undergo a colposcopy, a cytological examination of a smear, a diagnosis of the condition of the mammary glands, and a pelvic examination.

In a child, separation of adhesions with Ovestin is carried out only after consulting a pediatric gynecologist! The drug is applied to the girls on the adhesion area at bedtime, once / day, in severe cases - twice / day. It is necessary to apply the product clearly along the line of adhesions, without capturing the remaining areas. The duration of treatment is 14 days, then the doctor evaluates the results. If there is a positive trend, but adhesions persist, another course (14 days) is carried out after a 10-day break, and then the drug is replaced with a regular baby cream.

The effect on the endometrium is negligible (negligible risk of uterine bleeding).

Ovestin- an estrogen drug. Estriol (the active ingredient in Ovestin) is a natural estrogen. In the pre-menopause and post-menopause (natural or surgical), estriol is used to treat symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency. Estriol has a selective effect mainly on the cervix, vagina, vulva and is especially effective for the treatment of urogenital symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency. In cases of atrophy of the vaginal mucosa, Ovestin causes increased proliferation of the epithelium of the vagina and cervix, stimulates its blood supply, helps to restore the epithelium, normal microflora and the physiological vaginal environment, affects the quality and quantity of cervical mucus. As a result, the resistance of epithelial cells to infection and inflammation increases.

Unlike other estrogens, estriol has a short-term effect, since it a short time lingers in the nuclei of endometrial cells, and if the recommended dosing regimen is observed, endometrial proliferation should not be expected. In this regard, the cyclic use of progestogens is not necessary, postmenopausal withdrawal bleeding does not occur.

special instructions

Before starting hormone replacement therapy, it is necessary to conduct a complete medical examination.

During treatment, every 6 months should be carried out regular examinations(including breast examination, mammography) according to accepted medical practice.

It is necessary to exclude the presence of a history of thromboembolism, repeated spontaneous abortions, which indicates thrombophilia. The risk of thromboembolism increases with prolonged immobilization, severe trauma and surgical interventions. In these cases, it is necessary to temporarily interrupt hormone replacement therapy (4-6 weeks before surgery)

The use of estriol does not lead to an increase in the density of the mammary gland. And perhaps the use of estriol does not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Cases of venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis of the lower leg, pelvic vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism) are observed more often in women receiving hormone replacement therapy.

drug interaction

There were no cases of interaction of the drug Ovestin with other drugs.

Known data on the enhancement of the pharmacological effect of glucocorticosteroids (GCS), lipid-lowering agents when used together with estrogens. If necessary, the dose of GCS can be reduced.

It is possible to weaken the effects of drugs of male sex hormones, anticoagulants, antidepressants, diuretics, hypotensive and hypoglycemic agents.

Barbiturates, antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine, phenytoin) increase the metabolism of steroid hormones.

Antibiotics (ampicillin, rifampicin), general anesthetics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytics, antiepileptics, some antihypertensives, ethanol (alcohol) reduce the effectiveness of estrogens.

Folic acid and thyroid hormone preparations increase the effect of estriol.

Ovestin may alter the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants.

Estriol may increase pharmacological effect succinlycholine, theophylline, foleandomycin.
