Sergei Nikolaevich was born on November 13, 1974 in the capital of the USSR - the city of Moscow. In 1991, he completed a ten-year secondary education, after which he entered the Moscow State University at the Department of Virology. In 1996 he graduated from the university with a degree in biochemistry. In the same year, the future cosmonaut became a junior researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2000, Sergei Ryazansky completed his postgraduate studies at the institute in the field of aviation, space, and marine medicine.

First experiments

In 2000, Sergey Nikolayevich took part in an international experiment called "SFINCSS", which was organized by the countries participating in the ISS project. The purpose of the experiment was to study the relationship of participants with different mentality, as well as different nationalities. The experiment was carried out in a ground closed metal complex.

During the stay of the third crew in the complex, it was decided to send a "guest" - the seventh crew for a short period, which included Sergei Ryazansky. The team was testing new methods of preventing the harmful effects of weightlessness on the body, which were planned to be carried out on the ISS. Sergey Nikolaevich spent four weeks in the complex.

In 2001, the future cosmonaut conducted several experiments on long-term hypokinesia. Three times for seven days Sergey was in a state of insufficient motor activity, while limiting the volume and pace of movements, for further study of hypokinesia on the human body.

In 2002, Sergei Ryazansky participated in a 7-day experiment, which was carried out in a state of weightlessness. The latter, in this case, was simulated by immersion in a bath, which is covered with a waterproof cloth.

Space training at IBMP

In 2003, Sergei Nikolayevich became a senior researcher at the IBMP in the field of sensorimotor physiology. At the beginning of the same year, he underwent a detailed medical examination at the institute, for consideration as a candidate for astronauts. Later he was admitted to the Main Medical Board. As a result of passing all medical examinations Sergei Ryazansky was included in the cosmonaut corps. From June 2003 to June 2005, he underwent space training, passed the final exams with excellent marks. In July 2005, he received the qualification of "cosmonaut-researcher".

Subsequent experiments

In 2006, Sergey Nikolaevich defended his thesis in the field of physiology and became a candidate of biological sciences. In March 2007, he began training at the CPC. In November of the same year, Ryazansky took part in a two-week experiment as part of the MARS-500 program. The ultimate goal of the experiment is to study the impact of a long (520 days) stay in a closed complex that simulates the interior of a ship.

In 2009, the cosmonaut-researcher again took part in the MARS-500 experiment, this time spent 105 days in a closed complex. In 2010, Sergei Nikolayevich qualified as a test cosmonaut.

Space training at the CPC

According to the order of Roscosmos, in December 2010, on the creation of a single cosmonaut detachment, Sergei Ryazansky resigned from the IBMP and later entered the CTC. Since 2011, he began training for space flights on board the Soyuz series spacecraft. In March 2013, together with two other cosmonauts, Sergei Nikolayevich passed the ISS rendezvous exam on the fourth orbit with excellent marks. Two other exams were also excellent: on the control of the spacecraft of the Soyuz series and the Russian segment of the ISS.

In September 2013, he began training for a space expedition to the ISS as an onboard engineer.

The first flight

On September 26, 2013, Sergei Ryazansky, together with Oleg Kotov and Michael Hopkins, took off aboard the Soyuz TMA-10M as part of the 37th and 38th main expeditions to the station. Having performed a rendezvous with the ISS, similar to the one that Sergey conducted during the exam, the ship successfully docked with the station and the crew went on board. Cosmonaut Ryazansky spent 166 days at the station. During this time, Sergei Nikolayevich made three exits into the open space, lasting: 5 hours 50 minutes, 8 hours 7 minutes and 5 hours 58 minutes. During the first exit, the crew carried the torch of the 2014 Winter Olympics into space. Most of the other activities outside the ISS were directed towards installation work and scientific research.

On March 11, 2014, the Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft undocked from the station and a few hours later its descent vehicle delivered the astronauts to Earth.

Further activities

In the fall of 2014, the Novosti Kosmonavtiki website published information about the appointment of cosmonaut Ryazansky for the annual flight as part of the 52nd and 53rd expeditions to the ISS, which is scheduled for March 2017.

In September 2015, Sergei Nikolayevich was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, as well as a pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation. In 2016, a message was published about the participation of Ryazansky in the 54-55th expeditions to the ISS. In February 2016, the cosmonaut successfully completed a three-day winter survival training in a wooded and swampy area, and in June, a water survival training. The latter implies an imitation of an emergency situation, when the descent vehicle splashed down in an unplanned place and the cosmonauts are required to carry out a series of rescue actions.

On account of the forty-one-year-old cosmonaut and researcher Sergei Nikolaevich Ryazansky 19 scientific works, 12 reports, among which eight were held at international conferences.
